Why Do You Need Documentation Certification?
Documentation certification is required for all consultants to become prequalified with IDOT to perform construction inspection (Phase III) work. Construction Inspection consists of staking, material testing and inspection, documentation of materials and quantities, record keeping and enforcement of specifications applicable to a contractor's work on construction projects. For a complete list of requirements for consultant prequalification, visit the Consultant Prequalification web page at http://www.dot.state.il.us/dobuisns.html.
The purpose of this class is to provide the student with the ability to document contract quantities in compliance with state and federal standards. This class will cover project diary entries, quantity book preparation, cross-reference system, extra work reports, measurement and calculation of pay items for pay quantities occurring in road and bridge plans.
The three-day Documentation of Contract Quantities class and retests are administered by the Illinois Center for Transportation (ICT).
How to Become Certified
PREREQUISITES FOR CLASS: One year IDOT construction experience, familiarity with general highway and IDOT construction terminology and practice, and knowledge of basic algebra and geometry including Order of Operations and the ability to calculate areas and volumes.
To obtain Documentation Certification, one must successfully pass the test given during the Construction Documentation of Contract Quantities class. A passing score is 70% or greater, and the certification is valid for 4 years. A person certified can retake just the 2-hour Documentation Exam within 4 months of expiration to re-certify without retaking the class. Once a certificate has expired by more than 4 months, the individual must attend the class to become certified again. It is each individual's responsibility to remember to re-test close to the expiration date. No exceptions will be made.
Individuals who do not obtain a passing score at class are allowed to re-test one time. If they are not successful after the re-test attempt to obtain certification, they must re-attend the Construction Documentation of Contract Quantities 3-day class. The Illinois Center for Transportation has several re-test dates scheduled December through May. Requests for individual test dates will not be accepted.
Fees for Documentation Certification:

Spaces must be reserved with a credit card; only IDOT employees can select the voucher/IDOT billing option.
