Effectiveness of Geogrid-Reinforcement in Flexible Pavements: A Full-Scale Testing
Impact statement: Based on the field data collected, this full-scale testing research will validate response predictions of geogrid reinforced mechanistic model for Tensar and develop rutting and fatigue distress models calibrated for the Tensar key geogrid properties, geogrid-aggregate/soil interface properties, and pavement layer material inputs.

The primary objective of this research is to quantify the effectiveness of geogrid-reinforced flexible pavements. In order to achieve that, three main tasks have been identified: (1) construct instrumented full-scale flexible pavement test sections to evaluate geogrid-reinforced flexible pavements; (2) validate/calibrate the aforementioned mechanistic response model currently under development, and finally; (3) develop, part of an ongoing project, transfer functions (or distress models) for predicting rutting and/or fatigue performance of geogrid-reinforced flexible pavements using results obtained from the full-scale accelerated testing at the University of Illinois Advanced Transportation Research and Engineering Laboratory (ATREL).
