Summary of Project:
  This program certifies that contractors’ profilograph machines, which measure the smoothness of pavements, meet IDOT standards. Each year, clean, marked test lanes with an initial baseline profile for comparison are set up as a test track at the Rantoul Airport. Then, contractors’ machines are tested on the track, and the results are forwarded to IDOT. All contractors wanting to work with the state need to have their machine tested on this track.
Objective of Project:
  The PEV Program was developed to address several objectives: 1) obtain a greater knowledge of various profile devices, 2) assess the repeatability and variability of the profile measurements produced by each device, 3) assess the accuracy of each profile device as compared to the measurements by a reference profile device, and 4) verify profile equipment for use on construction projects.
Expected Outcome:
  Implementation of a program to guarantee the accuracy of pavement smoothness ratings for state of Illinois work.
