Project Title:
Median Cable Scanning Tour (Special Project)
Start Date: 8/22/2005
End Date: 1/31/2006
Summary of Project:
This project will allow representatives from several mid-western DOT's to perform a scanning tour of Ohio, Oklahoma and Texas to learn from their experiences in the use of high-tension cable barriers. Information on system characteristics and performance will be gathered from the states visited and from manufacturers of high-tension cable barrier systems. Alternative high-tension cable barrier systems and products will be evaluated for possible use in Illinois.
Objective of Project:
To organize and perform a scanning tour to identify effective and efficient approaches to reduce the number and severity of freeway median crossover crashes.
Expected Outcome:
Gather information and report to IDOT and other mid-western DOT's regarding the system characteristics, performance and maintenance of various alternative high-tension cable barrier systems. Identify any other issues that need further exploration before pursuing use of high-tension cable barrier systems in Illinois.
