ICT and UIUC Transportation Group Present Research at 88th Annual TRB Meeting; Win Three Best Paper Awards

The ICT/UIUC transportation group had a strong presence at the Transportation Research Board 88th Annual Meeting which convened in Washington, D.C., on January 11-15, 2009. The ICT/UIUC researchers presented their cutting-edge research on over 40 topics (see list below), won three "best paper" awards, and participated in various committee meetings and other conference activities.

A paper authored by Imad L. Al-Qadi, Hao Wang, Pyeong Jun Yoo (Korea Institute of Construction Technology), and Samer H. Dessouky titled "Dynamic Analysis and In-Situ Validation of Perpetual Pavement Response to Vehicular Loading" was the runner-up for the TRB K. B. Woods Award. The K. B. Woods Award was established by the Executive Committee in 1971 and may be given annually for the outstanding paper published in the field of design and construction of transportation facilities. It honors the 19th chairman of the Highway Research Board, who was professor at the Schools of Engineering at Purdue University and active in the affairs of the Board throughout his career. This award-winning paper was based on the results of ICT project R59, Evaluation of Pavement Damage Due to New Tire Designs.

Professor Erol Tutumluer and his advisee and co-author, Phillip Donovan, were recipients of the TRB Geology and Properties of Earth Materials Section Best Paper Award for their paper, "Use of Falling Weight Deflectometer Testing to Determine Relative Damage in Asphalt Pavement Unbound Aggregate Layers." The award was presented at the Mineral Aggregates Committee Meeting during the TRB Meeting.

Francisco Evangelista, Jeffery Roesler, and Glaucio Paulino received the 2009 Bryant Mather Best Paper Award for "Numerical Simulations of Fracture Resistance of Functionally Graded Concrete Materials," reviewed by the Concrete Materials and Placement Techniques Committee and judged as the 2009 Best Paper by the Concrete Materials Section.

The ICT/UIUC attendees also enjoyed mingling with alumni of the UI Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at an alumni reception at New Heights Restaurant on Tuesday evening (see pictures posted). Over 150 alumni attended this reception.

Approximately 10,000 transportation officials from around the world attended this conference which covers all transportation modes, with more than 3,000 presentations in nearly 600 sessions addressing topics of interest to all attendees that included policy makers, administrators, practitioners, researchers, and representatives of government, industry, and academic institutions.
