ICT Executive Committee Meets and Approves 13 New Projects

The ICT Executive Committee held its spring meeting on April 14, 2009, in Springfield, Illinois and approved 13 new research ideas for funding.

Some examples of the varied research topics the Executive Committee approved include: "green friendly" best management practices for interstate rest areas, LED roadway lighting evaluation and field testing, and designing, producing, and constructing fine-graded hot mix asphalt on Illinois roadways.

At the meeting, ICT Director Imad Al-Qadi gave a summary of research projects to date. Currently, ICT has a total of 106 projects. Of those projects, 40 have been completed and 66 are active. Participating in ICT are 62 academic researchers, 50 graduate students, 10 universities, several private consulting firms, federal and local government agencies, and a not-for-profit agency. To date, outsourced projects total $2.8 million, and ICT has significantly exceeded its goals for outsourcing.

At least four of the newly approved research projects, with an estimated cost of $760,000, will be outsourced to other universities or private researchers.

ICT will post the RFPs for the projects to be outsourced on its website http://ict.illinois.edu in early June.
