CALL FOR PAPERS

Special Issue on

Rail Transportation and Engineering

in the

Journal of Transportation Engineering

The ASCE Rail Transportation Committee is working with the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Transportation Engineering (JTE) to organize a special issue focused on rail transportation and engineering. Papers on freight, intercity and regional passenger rail are solicited. A broad scope ranging from facilities and materials to systems-level engineering and analysis is intended. Topics of interest include all aspects of railway infrastructure such as: roadbed; track geometry, structure, components & materials; bridges; signals & traffic control; and power distribution systems, as well as other types of rail facilities such as: stations, yards & terminals, maintenance facilities, operation control and dispatching centers. Papers ranging from planning, design, construction, maintenance, operations, environmental performance, safety & risk, energy efficiency, and economics are encouraged. The issue is intended to be international in scope and papers from all countries are welcomed. All papers will be peer-reviewed consistent with the usual editorial standards and practices of the JTE. More information about JTE can be found at: http://scitation.aip.org/teo/

This special issue is intended to be the beginning of an ongoing expansion of rail content in JTE to reflect its increasing importance as a comprehensive, balanced journal covering all aspects of the field of transportation engineering. Rail freight and passenger transportation are experiencing substantial growth worldwide and this is expected to continue for the foreseeable future due to rail's economic and energy efficiency and its contribution to environmental sustainability. As a result there is substantial new research and analysis underway in support of further improvements in infrastructure engineering and operations, performance, safety and design that is worthy of publication in an academic-quality, archival journal, such as JTE.

Manuscripts should conform to standard ASCE journal format requirements. Information about these can be found at the website: http://www.pubs.asce.org/authors/index.html#manreq

If possible manuscripts for review should be submitted in the form of a pdf file , along with a cover letter stating the, title of the paper, the names and affiliation of all authors, and identifying the corresponding author and providing that person's complete contact information (name, affiliation, mailing address, telephone, fax and e-mail address). If e-format is not possible, then five (5) hardcopies should be mailed to the address below.

Manuscripts should be e-mailed to < ASCErailroad at uiuc.edu > and addressed to:

Christopher P.L. Barkan, Ph.D.

Chairman - ASCE Rail Transportation Committee

1201 Newmark Civil Engineering Lab, MC-250

University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign

Urbana , IL 61801 , USA

Manuscripts must be received by 1 November 2006 to assure consideration for the special rail issue of JTE.

We will also be needing reviewers for the submitted papers.  If you are interested in serving in this capacity, please contact Chris Barkan <cbarkan@uiuc.edu> and Steve Chrismer, the committee secretary at <SChrismer@ltk.com> providing your contact information and the topical areas that you would be interested in reviewing a paper on.
If you have any questions please contact :
