08-02: STUDYING AND MINIMIZING TRAFFIC-RELATED WORK ZONE CRASHES IN ILLINOIS

The objective of this proposed research is to study and recommend strategies to minimize the severity and frequency of traffic-related work zone crashes in Illinois and to investigate the practicality and effectiveness of the CHSP proposed strategies to improve work zone safety. This research is designed to support the safety goals of the IDOT Safety Engineering Policy 3-07 and the FHWA Work Zone Safety and Mobility Rule ( 23 CFR 630 Subpart J). The research should include a comprehensive analysis of the frequency and contributing factors of work zone crashes. This in turn would help guide future research. The potential end users of the research results would include transportation professionals in engineering, enforcement, education, and emergency medical services at the federal, state and local levels.
