08-05: SUPERIORITY AND CONSTRUCTIBILITY OF FIBROUS ADDITIVES FOR BRIDGE DECK OVERLAYS

The major objectives of this study are:
(1) To design high performance fibrous modified overlay mixtures with different types and contents of synthetic fibers.
(2) To evaluate the constructability of IDOT’s various overlays using synthetic fibers.
(3) To determine the best method and equipment needed to mix synthetic fibers with the various overlays used by IDOT.
(4) To provide a life-cycle cost comparison with the other overlay types taking into consideration the initial material installation cost, service life, aesthetic issues, riding quality, time to open to traffic, and overall performance.
(5) To promote the use of synthetic fibers in overlays.

This research in turn will lead to substantial life-cycle cost savings, an aesthetic product, good riding quality, and enhancement in the overall structural behavior of bridges.
