Jongeun Baek completed the requirements for a Ph.D. in Transportation Engineering from the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) at UIUC. Dr. Baek was advised by Dr. Al-Qadi. Dr. Baek has assisted with two ICT projects including “Thin Quiet Long-Lasting High Friction Surface Layer” and “Cost-Effectiveness and Performance of Overlay Systems in Illinois.” The title of Dr. Baek’s dissertation is “Modeling Reflective Cracking Development in Hot-Mix Asphalt Overlays and Quantification of Control Techniques.” Dr. Baek will remain with CEE as a post-doctoral researcher and will assist with research on warm asphalt and controlling moisture damage to pavements.

Zhen Leng, a PhD student in transportation engineering advised by Dr. Al-Qadi, has been selected to receive the Mavis Future Faculty Fellows Award for Doctoral Students (MF3). The MF3 Program provides opportunity for doctoral students interested in teaching engineering to gain experience in the focus areas of research, teaching, and mentoring. The MF3 Program is made possible by a generous bequest of Frederic T. and Edith F. Mavis. Mr. Leng has assisted with the ICT research project “Tack Coat Optimization for HMA Overlays.”

Hao Wang, a PhD student in transportation engineering advised by Dr. Al-Qadi, has been awarded the Yee Memorial Fund Fellowship by the UIUC College of Engineering for the 2010-2011 academic year. The selection of Yee fellowship is based on academic performance, demonstrated interest in engineering education, and research accomplishments. The Yee Memorial Fund Fellowship has been made possible by a generous bequest of Drs. Warren and Ming Ting Yee. Mr. Wang has assisted with the ICT research projects “Evaluation of Pavement Damage Due to New Tire Designs.”
