ICT Director Imad Al-Qadi was profiled in ASCE News for joining the ranks of its Distinguished Members. Only 586 engineers in the 158-year history of ASCE have been honored with this distinction.
ICT project R56, Speed Photo Enforcement, was selected by the AASHTO Research Advisory Committee Value of Research task force as one of four of District 3’s top regional high value research projects. As a result, the project will be featured in an upcoming public relations brochure on high-value research. The PI for R56 is Ray Benekohal.
Xiaopeng Li, a UIUC Ph.D student and part of the ICT research team for safety performance functions, was selected to receive a 2010 Dwight David Eisenhower Graduate Fellowship from the FHWA. Li is advised by Yanfeng Ouyang.
ICT student researchers Ibrahim Abuawad and Kivanc Avrenli were part of a team from UIUC that placed second at the 2010 Midwestern Traffic Bowl Competition, sponsored by the Institute of Traffic Engineers.
ICT student researcher Evgueni T. Filipov has been selected to receive a National Science Foundation (NSF) Graduate Research Fellowship. NSF Fellows are anticipated to become experts who can contribute significantly to research, teaching, and innovations in science and engineering. Filipov was also recently awarded the 2010-2011 Structural Engineers Foundation Scholarship.
ICT Director Gives Several Invited Lectures
ICT Director Imad Al-Qadi has presented three keynote speeches this summer including “Towards Sustainable Transportation Systems” at the U.S. NSF and China NNSF sponsored International Workshop on Energy and Environment in Development of Sustainable Asphalt Pavements, “Towards Long Lasting Pavements and the Myth of Bottom-Up Fatigue Cracking” at GeoShanghai 2010, and “Towards Long Lasting Flexible Pavements” at the 16th Annual Greak Lakes Geotechnical and Geoenvironmental Conference.
Additionally, Al-Qadi was invited by Airbus in France as part of team from Boeing and the FAA to discuss the tire high pressure impact on pavements. His talk was on the “Airport Instrumentation and Effect of Aircraft Tire Contact Pressure on Runway Pavement Responses.”
Al-Qadi was also invited by the Illinois Tollway Authority to present to its Board of Directors, executive staff, and tollway transition team on “Transportation: An Economic Growth Engine.”
