ICT Investigator Spotlight: Kerrie Schattler, Bradley

As ICT investigator, Kerrie Schlattler is improving intersection safety for Illinois motorists, by evaluating the effectiveness of flashing yellow arrows (FYA) at protected/permissive left turn signals in terms of safety and operations. The information she gains from this study will help IDOT quantify the safety and operational benefits of upgrading to FYA displays.

Schlattler notes that IDOT has already installed FYAs at 50 of the 105 total locations to date in the Peoria area. She says, “They are installed along the main corridor I travel on every day from home to work.”

Prior to joining Bradley, Shlattler was an Assistant Professor on a research track at Wayne State University (WSU), in Detroit, Michigan for a two-year period. “Being a WSU alumnus, I earned my Bachelor and Master of Science degrees and Doctoral degree, while working on numerous research studies over an eight-year period as a part of WSU’s Transportation Research Group. I played an integral role in securing and collaborating on research projects sponsored by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), US Department of Labor, Institute of Transportation Engineers, Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT), the Office of Highway Safety Planning, Michigan State Police, Automobile Association of America (AAA) and others.”

After joining the CEC Department at Bradley in August 2005, she continued to actively engage students in research activities in the area of transportation engineering through funded research projects sponsored by the Federal Highway Administration and the Peoria County Highway Department.

Schlattler also has experience in management systems, such as asset management systems, pavement management systems and geographic information systems. She served as co-PI on an ICT project to implement pavement management systems for local agencies.

Her research interests include traffic safety and operations, intersection safety, pedestrian safety, effectiveness evaluation of safety countermeasures, driver behavioral issues (red light running, speeding, safety restraint systems, distracted driving, and aggressive driving), highway work zone innovations and safety, traffic signal system optimization and simulation, transportation and transit planning applications, asset management systems, and pavement management systems.
