The fourth International Conference on Transportation Geotechnics will be held virtually May 24-27. Early bird registration for the conference, sponsored by Illinois Center for Transportation, is open through March 31.

Chairman Erol Tutumluer, University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign professor, hopes the conference bridges the gap between geotechnical, pavement and railway engineering by applying broad engineering concepts to address construction, design, maintenance and upgrading of our airfields, harbor facilities, railways, roads and other vital infrastructure.

“This year’s 4th ICTG will be a virtual event to bring together engineers, researchers and practitioners from nearly 44 countries to hear from top experts, exchange knowledge and learn from over 200 papers, which will be presented under 16 different themes in live, simul-live and poster sessions,” Tutumluer said. “I strongly recommend participation in this year’s major event to all transportation professionals involved in building sustainable and smart transportation infrastructure.”

This year’s conference features the following keynote speakers and six other special lecturers.

  • 3rd Proctor Lecture presented by William Powrie, a Southampton University (United Kingdom) professor
  • The American Society of Civil Engineers Carl Monismith Lecture featuring Tom Papagiannakis, a University of Texas at San Antonio professor
  • Keynote Lecture by Chungsik Yoo, president of the International Geosynthetics Society and professor at Sungkyunkwan University (South Korea)

ICTG is organized by the Technical Committee 202 on Transportation Geotechnics of the International Society of Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering. It’s had three successful past conferences in Nottingham, United Kingdom, Sapporo, Japan and Guimarães, Portugal. Originally intended for an in-person event in Chicago in August 2020, this year’s virtual event will be the first time the conference has been held in the U.S.
