ICT has strong presence at 2013 Airfield and Highway Pavement Conference

The Transportation and Development Institute (T&DI) of the American Society of Civil Engineers hosted its 2013 Airfield and Highway Pavement Conference June 9–12, 2013, in Los Angeles, California. ICT director Imad Al-Qadi served as co-chair of the conference, which drew 300 attendees and focused on the theme of sustainable and efficient pavements.

Highlights of the conference included a keynote address by Doug Failing, executive director of the Highway Program for Los Angeles County Metro, who discussed City of Los Angeles management challenges. The Carl L. Monismith Award Lecture was presented by Robert Lytton, Professor and Fred J. Benson Chair in Civil Engineering at Texas A&M University.

The conference also featured events sponsored by the T&DI Committee on Younger Members (CYM), which was formed in 2012 to recognize outstanding research and encourage participation in T&DI by members 35 years old and younger. CYM sponsored a networking event at the conference and a competition for best papers by CYM members. To be eligible, entries needed to have a first author who qualifies as a younger member. There were 25 entries, and certificates were presented to the following winners:

• First Place: Jaime A. Hernandez, graduate student at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign; “Impact of Tire Loading and Tire Pressure on Measured 3D Contact Stresses”
• Second Place: Colleen W. Kinross, Queen’s University at Kingston; “Microindentation Specification Grading of Thin Film Aged Asphalt Cements from a Northeastern Ontario Pavement Trial”
