Al-Qadi receives ASCE's Francis C. Turner Award

ICT director Imad Al-Qadi is the 2014 recipient of the American Society of Civil Engineers Francis C. Turner Award for his national and international leadership in the field of transportation engineering research and education, and for his long and outstanding contributions to the advancement of the knowledge and practice of pavement engineering and sustainability.

In the announcement of the award, ASCE notes, “Al-Qadi is a world-recognized leader in the field of pavement materials and the application of advanced technologies for forensic investigation, analysis, and design of pavement systems. He also broke new ground by emphasizing sustainability and life cycle of pavements and transportation infrastructure. Currently the president of the Board of Governors of ASCE’s Transportation and Development Institute (T&DI), Al-Qadi has authored or coauthored more than 550 publications, more than 300 of which are fully refereed papers (185 in periodic journals). His research resulted in the development of new tests, testing specifications, advanced modeling and simulation of pavement loading, and analysis of radar electromagnetic wave interactions with civil engineering materials, roads, and bridges.”

In addition to his role as director at ICT, Al-Qadi is the Founder Professor of Engineering in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He has managed more than 175 ICT-sponsored projects. Al-Qadi is the only pavement engineer to receive the National Science Foundation Young Investigator Award and the Quadrennial International Geosynthetic Society Award. He was honored with ASCE’s James Laurie Prize in 2007 and was named an ASCE Distinguished Member in 2010.
