ICT and UIUC transportation group present research at the 93rd TRB

Once again, ICT researchers had a strong presence at the Transportation Research Board’s most recent annual meeting, which convened in Washington, D.C., January 12–16, 2014. ICT-affiliated researchers presented their cutting-edge research on more than 65 topics. Eleven of these presentations were based on research sponsored by the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT).

This year’s presentations of IDOT-sponsored research were the following:

  • Engineering Cost-Benefit Analysis of Thin Durable Asphalt Overlays (14-0956). Imad Al-Qadi (with Songsu Son).
  • Asphalt Pavements with High RAP Content: Economic and Environmental Perspectives (14-3488). Imad Al-Qadi (with Qazi Aurangzeb).
  • Best Practices for Implementation of Tack Coat, TRP Recommendations (P14-5189). Imad Al-Qadi (with Alejandro Salinas, Applied Research Associates, Inc.; Khaled Hasiba; and Derek Parish, Illinois Department of Transportation).
  • Quantification of Asphalt Binder Replacement Effectiveness Using Recycled Shingles Through Fine Asphalt Mixture-Level Testing (14-5058). Imad Al-Qadi and Hasan Ozer (with Ahmad Kanaan).
  • Potential Moisture Damage of Asphalt Mixtures with Additives Using Various Test Mechanisms (14-2925). Imad Al-Qadi and Hasan Ozer (with Ibrahim Mohammad Abuawad and Qazi Aurangzeb).
  • Field and Numerical Evaluation of Snowplow Instrumentation and Data Collection System (14-0616). Enad Mahmoud, University of Texas–Pan American; and Souhail Elhouar, Bradley University (with Tim Peters, Illinois Department of Transportation; and Drew Dragoo, Bradley University).

  • Effect of Limestone and Inorganic Processing Addition on Performance of Concrete for Pavement and Bridge Decks (14-4801). Mohsen Issa, University of Illinois, Chicago.
  • Evaluation of Aggregate Resistance to Breakage, Abrasion, and Polishing Using Advanced Aggregate Imaging Systems (14-4580). Erol Tutumluer (with Maziar Moaveni; Enad Mahmoud, University of Texas–Pan American; Eduardo Madrigal Ortiz, Bradley University; and Sheila Beshears, Illinois Department of Transportation).
  • Flexural Capacity of Full-Depth and Two-Lift Concrete Slabs with Recycled Aggregates (14-1239). Jeffery Roesler (with Alexander Brand and Armen Amirkhanian).
  • Effects of Supplemental Traffic Signing at Flashing Yellow Arrow Left-Turn Signal Indications (14-4031). Kerrie L. Schattler, Bradley University (with Beau Burdett, University of Wisconsin–Madison; Cody Gulla, Bradley University; Jessica Lund, Hermann & Associates; and Travis Wallenfang, Bradley University).

Several ICT researchers were recognized for outstanding research during this year’s TRB. Imad Al-Qadi, Founder Professor of Engineering and ICT director, was awarded the prestigious S.S. Steinberg Award from the American Roads and Transportation Builders Association. Al-Qadi also participated in a poster session recognizing the 16 AASHTO High Value Research projects for 2013. Ernest Barenberg, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering Professor Emeritus, gave a Prime Lecture titled “History and Future Research Needs for Pavement Systems.” Doctoral student Qazi Aurangzeb received the RB AFD70 Gene Skok Award for Outstanding Paper by a Young Author. Doctoral student Pengcheng Shangguan won first prize in the student poster competition in the 4th International Association of Chinese Infrastructure Professionals (IACIP) meeting.

Approximately 12,000 transportation researchers, academics, engineers, and students from around the world attended this year’s conference, which covered all transportation modes. More than 4,500 presentations and workshops addressed this year’s theme, “Celebrating Our Legacy, Anticipating Our Future.”

ICT and University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign transportation faculty and students enjoyed mingling with alumni and friends of ICT at a reception held at Stone’s Crossing Restaurant on Tuesday evening. More than 200 guests attended the reception.
