Illinois transportation team takes on the 98th annual Transportation Research Board meetings
2/1/2019
Despite the snow, Illinois transportation students and faculty made their way to Washington D.C. to attend the 98th Annual Meetings of the Transportation Research Board (TRB) at the Walter W. Washington Convention Center January 13–17, 2019.
The TRB program covered all transportation modes, including topics of interest to policy makers, practitioners, representatives of the government, academic institutions, industry, administrators, and researchers. There were more than 5,000 presentations and close to 800 sessions and workshops. This year’s TRB meeting spotlight theme was, “Transportation for a Smart, Sustainable, and Equitable Future.”
The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign student and faculty continued to maintain a strong contribution to the TRB program through presenting numerous papers, posters and workshops, and chairing technical committee meetings and sessions. Illinois Center for Transportation affiliated researchers also gave many presentations based on research projects sponsored by the Illinois Department of Transportation as well as other sponsors including the Federal Highway Administration, Federal Aviation Administration, and industry.
More than 600 UIUC Civil and Environmental students, faculty, staff, and alumni came together for the annual Illinois transportation group reception held during the Annual Meetings of the TRB on January 13. Year after year, this reception is one of the biggest hits at TRB because it gives all attendees an opportunity to catch up, network, and discuss the latest advancements in the transportation field.
UIUC CEE Department Ph.D. Student Aniruddha Baral received a 2019 Best Student Research Paper Award from the Basic Research and Emerging Technologies Related to Concrete Committee (AFN10) of the Concrete Materials Section (AFN00). The title of his research paper was “Self-Cleaning of Photocatalytic Mortar with Glass Aggregate and Calcium Sulfoaluminate-Belite Cement.” Aniruddha’s work is advised Jeff Roesler.
Additionally, CEE Doctoral candidate Priyanka Sarker won the “Three-Minute Thesis (3MT) Competition: Concise Portrayal of Research Discovery to Non-specialist Audience.” 3MT competition, co-sponsored by TRB Operations and Preservation Group Young Members Council and the Maintenance and Preservation Section (AHD00), was open to all graduate students conducting research in all areas of Transportation Engineering who have made significant progress toward their degrees.
The next TRB annual meeting will take place January 12–16, 2020.
