New ICT-IDOT reports, project

Illinois Center for Transportation is pleased to announce the publication of reports for the following Illinois Department of Transportation-sponsored projects:

R27-151: Investigating the Optimum Performance of Snowplowable Reflective Pavement Markers
Here researchers investigated how snowplowable reflective pavement markers, cast-iron and plastic reflective indicators embedded in the pavement’s centerline, held up to snowplows in northern, central and southern Illinois over a three-year period. They also sought to understand the markers’ safety effectiveness by evaluating crash data from Illinois Tollway.

R27-182: Size and Shape Determination of Riprap and Large-sized Aggregates Using Field Imaging
Riprap — rock or other material used to protect shorelines against erosion — is often inspected visually or manually. To speed up the process, researchers are in the midst of developing an automated method to assess riprap stockpiles. A software app will accompany the final report, which has an anticipated June publication date.

R27-186: Work Zone Safety Performance on Illinois State Routes
This project investigates the causes of increased work zone crashes in Illinois. Researchers explore work zone exposure as well as crashes and fatalities/injuries to help Illinoisans drive “zero fatalities to a reality” ― an IDOT goal.

R27-SP41: Small-cell Installation in Transportation Infrastructure — A Literature Review
With an increasing number of people and devices using cellular data, IDOT is turning to small cells — low-powered antennas — to increase users’ cell service. By building a literature review, the research team explores the use and potential hazards of small cells.

ICT is also excited to announce the start of a new IDOT-sponsored project:

R27-SP42: Destructive Testing of IDOT Structure Number 020-3087
Here researchers test two undamaged beams of a recently collapsed bridge built in 1967. Through their efforts, industry experts hope to better predict the long-term performance of bridge beams.
