Awards and honors

The achievements of several ICT investigators and students have been recognized with the following awards:

• Professor Yanfeng Ouyang, associate professor and Paul F. Kent endowed faculty scholar, was selected to receive the 2015 Walter L. Huber Civil Engineering Research Prize “for pioneering research on transportation planning and management, particularly as it relates to sustainable, resilient, and safe design of coupled complex transportation networks and infrastructure systems against internal and external risks and uncertainties.”
• Professor Ouyang was also recognized with the Donald Biggar Willett Faculty Scholar Award from the UIUC College of Engineering.
• Professor Jeff Roesler received the 2015 Stanley H. Pierce Faculty Award from the UIUC College of Engineering for encouraging student–faculty cooperation. 
• Ryan Fries, associate professor and graduate program director at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville (SIUE) was named SIUE’s 2015 Paul Simon Outstanding Teacher Scholar. The award is presented to an SIUE faculty member who has been recognized as an outstanding teacher and research scholar. 
• Timothy Stark, professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at UIUC, was elected vice chair of the Embankments, Dams, and Slopes (EDS) Technical Committee of the American Society of Civil Engineers. The mission of the EDS committee is to foster advancement of engineering practices and recognition of issues supporting the safety of earth fill dams, levees, embankments, and slopes.
• Professor Stark also gave the 2015 James M. Hoover Lecture at Iowa State University on March 12, 2015. The lecture described the two floodwall failures during Hurricane Katrina that inundated the Lower Ninth Ward in New Orleans and the recent federal court ruling in favor of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. 
• Megan McGovern, Ph.D. student in industrial and enterprise systems engineering at UIUC received the 2015 Illinois Bituminous Conference Student Research Award “for her innovative approach for in situ detection of asphalt concrete oxidative aging.” José Rivera-Perez, master’s student in civil engineering at UIUC, received the Jerry Leifheit Scholarship from the Illinois Asphalt Pavement Association.
• Ph.D. candidate Hani Ramezani’s paper, “An Innovative Approach to Reduce Fuel Consumption in Work Zones Using Speed Harmonization,” was selected as winner of the 2014 Graduate Paper Competition that was held in the Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE), Illinois Section.
• ICT/IDOT Project R27-077: Evaluating Pavement Markings was recognized with the High Impact Project Award at the 101st Annual Transportation and Highway Engineering (T.H.E.) conference in February. Carmine Dwyer, Senior Engineer, and William Vavrik, Vice President and Principal Engineer at Applied Research Associates, Inc., served as principal investigator and co-principal investigator, respectively. The study was overseen by an IDOT Technical Review Panel (TRP) chaired by Kelly Morse, Analytical Chemistry Laboratory Supervisor at IDOT. TRP members were Kyle Armstrong, John Benda, Mike Fassero, Tim Kell, Steve Lynch, Marshall Metcalf, Matt Mueller, Brian Pfeifer, Kurt Schuldt, and Aaron Weatherholt.
• Bill Kramer, IDOT Unit Chief of the Foundation and Geotechnical Group, and Kelly Morse were named by IDOT and ICT as IDOT TRP Chairs of the Year at the T.H.E. annual conference.
