The American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Transportation and Development Institute (T&DI) Student Chapter at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign recently went to the Caterpillar Visitors Center in downtown Peoria. Eighteen engineering students Champaign toured the center, which provides a fascinating historical background of Caterpillar and the people behind the progress of one of the world’s most renowned companies.

The student chapter also organized two MATLAB workshops: Basic MATLAB I and Intermediate MATLAB II on February 27 and March 5, respectively. Erman Gungor, a graduate student in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Illinois and the community outreach chair of the ASCE T&DI Student Chapter, served as lead instructor of the workshops. More than 60 students attended the two events, which covered basic skills of MATLAB, including defining basic data structures, relational operations, plotting, functions, and control flows; and intermediate skills of MATLAB, including advanced data structures, debugging, basic graphical user interface development, and toolboxes.

More information about the chapter’s upcoming activities and events is available at the ASCE T&DI Student Chapter website.

Another student group, the Student Chapter of the Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE), visited Willard Airport in Savoy, Illinois. The visit was designed to educate students about various operations at the airport, including the passenger terminal, fire station, airport maintenance areas, and drive-by runways and taxiways. The visit was a great opportunity for students to witness the new expansion of the runway and taxiways to accommodate larger planes. Students were also shown how to interpret the markings on a runway.
