Longtime CEE staff member, ICT supporter retires

A longtime Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering staff member and Illinois Center for Transportation supporter is enjoying more time with his family after his retirement from the university on April 30.

CEE Assistant Head for Administration Steven Daley was Guest of Honor at an open house and barbecue at the Advanced Transportation Research and Engineering Laboratory (ATREL) organized to celebrate this milestone early last month.

Daley is a certified and licensed public accountant who has worked for the department since 1998 and for the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign for more than 30 years. Before his time as assistant head, he was an accountant for the Materials Research Laboratory from 1987 to 1996 and a senior accountant for the National Center for Supercomputing Applications from 1995 to 1998.

Daley’s involvement with ICT goes back to 2005 when he helped put in place the first of a series of agreements with the Illinois Department of Transportation, which brought federal funding to ATREL. This funding was essential in creating and sustaining ICT.

More than 65 people celebrated with Daley by touring the facility he has been such an important part of. Guests then enjoyed award-winning barbecue prepared by ICT Senior Sustainability Implementation Engineer David Lippert.

Daley holds Bachelor of Science degrees in Business Personnel Management and Business Accounting, both from Eastern Illinois University.

In retirement, Daley and his wife plan to downsize and build a more humble home now that their sons have grown. He also wants to spend more time with his mother, who is 93.
