Planting seeds: Kent Seminar Series

Illinois Center for Transportation graduate students organized the Spring 2021 Kent Seminar Series, a 13-speaker series featuring presentations on pavement, systems and autonomous vehicles. They include the following (listed in chronological order):

• Marwa Hassan, director of the regional University Transportation Center Tran-SET and CETF Distinguished Professor and Jacobs Professor of Excellence at Louisiana State University, “Innovative infrastructure materials.”
• Mark Synder, president of Pavement Engineering and Research Consultants, “Design, fabrication and construction of modern precast concrete pavement systems.”
• Richard Kim, Jimmy D. Clark Distinguished University Professor and Alumni Association Distinguished Graduate Professor at North Carolina State University, “Index-volumetrics’ and performance-volumetrics’ relationships.”
• Jonathan Hall, applied microeconomist at University of Toronto, “Can behavioral interventions be too salient? Evidence from traffic safety messages.”
• Costa Samaras, associate professor at Carnegie Mellon University, “A robust decision-making approach to assess pathways for U.S. passenger vehicles and last-mile delivery decarbonization.”
• Elise Miller-Hooks, professor and the Bill and Eleanor Hazel Endowed Chair in Infrastructure Engineering at George Mason University, “Transportation systems resilience: Models and algorithms.” This presentation was not recorded.
• Jo Sias, director of Center for Infrastructure Resilience to Climate and co-director of the Infrastructure and Climate Network at the University of New Hampshire, “Incorporating climate change into flexible pavement analysis, design and management.”
• Ann Schlenker, director for Center for Transportation Systems at Argonne National Laboratory, “Innovations reshaping mobility.”
• Mary Joyce, global general manager and vice president of New Mobility UL, LLC, “ACES: The transformation of the mobility industry.”
• John Haddock, professor at Purdue University, “Dynamic wireless charging for heavy trucks: A pavement perspective.”
• Hua Cai, assistant professor at Purdue University, “Planning charging infrastructure for shared mobility and autonomous vehicle adoption.”
• Chris Hendrickson, Hamerschlag University Professor of Engineering Emeritus at Carnegie Mellon University, “Accelerating decarbonization in the U.S. transportation system.”
• Paul Kwiat, Bardeen Professor of Physics at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and director of the Illinois Quantum Information Science and Technology Center, “Planes, trains and automobiles: Expanding the domain of quantum information science.”

This year’s distinguished speaker was Chris Hendrickson. His April 22 lecture attracted students, academics and industry consultants.
