52nd Illinois Bituminous Paving Conference

The 52nd annual Illinois Bituminous Paving Conference convened on Dec. 7, 2011, at the I Hotel and Conference Center in Champaign.  This year’s conference had record registrations of over 300 attendees.  Participants gathered for the compact one-day program that included the latest state-of-the-art and state-of-the-practice information in the area of bituminous development and practice.

Speakers came from in state, out of state, as well as from other countries who spoke on a wide variety of engaging topics including, using high RAP, current research on durable thin overlays and warm mixes, paving on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, and pavement engineering in the Netherlands.  All of the speaker presentations are posted on the conference program website.

Additionally, a new segment was included into the conference this year.  Special awards were presented to individuals for their contributions this past year.  The awards were presented to the following people:

  • Leadership in Bituminous Engineering: Marshall Thompson
  • Bituminous Engineer: Bill Pine
  • Student Research: Songsu Son
  • Innovative Research: Zhen Leng and Pengcheng Shangguan
