Traffic management system gets field test

On a university campus, students on their smart phones are a common site. But last weekend, ICT researcher Dan Work mobilized approximately 100 student volunteers from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign’s Civil and Environmental Engineering department to put their phones to good use:  to document traffic surrounding the Illinois-Indiana football game.

This exercise used an innovative new system that monitors traffic congestion and can provide valuable, real-time information to police, emergency personnel, and the public with the goal of helping traffic flow more smootly during major events. It is the most massive deployment to date of the system researchers call “TrafficTurk,” which promises to revolutionize traffic monitoring during extreme congestion events.
