11/1/2017
Professors emeritus Ernest Barenberg and Marshall Thompson of the University of Illinois Civil and Environmental Engineering Department were recently honored with the CEE Alumni Association Distinguished Faculty Awards for their outstanding contributions to the department, education of students, and their pursuit of knowledge and the betterment of society through research.
Barenberg has contributed to the theoretical understanding of pavement behavior and responses and has led several innovations in post-tensioned and precast concrete pavement. Thompson contributed to transportation and pavement engineering through characterization of asphalt, granular and soil materials responses, behavior, and performance; he developed new flexible pavement design methods for roads and airfields and worked on soil improvement techniques and procedures for horizontal construction and vehicle mobility. For more than thirty years, both faculty members have taught and mentored CEE students, challenging them to strive toward the next level of professional excellence.
