International transportation Ph.D. student symposium held in Hong Kong

The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) welcomed more than 70 transportation engineering doctoral students and advisors last month, who gathered in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering to exchange knowledge, ideas, and expertise in the area of pavement engineering.

The International Transportation PhD Student Symposium was originally initiated in December 2012 to foster mutual collaboration between the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) and the Harbin Institute of Technology (HIT). The symposium was later expanded to include other highly-recognized educational institutions to allow students from all over the world to see their transportation research in a global context.

In its seventh year, the symposium was hosted by the Hong Kong PolyU and chaired by UIUC alumnus Dr. Zhen Leng. It brought together internationally recognized faculty and doctoral students in the field of pavements from various top universities. The topics presented this year ranged from permeable pavements, pavement roughness and vehicle rolling resistance, multi-scale modeling of asphalt mixture, acoustic response of pavements, pavement non-contact evaluation, warm rubberized asphalt, aging and rejuvenation of asphalt binder, and image analysis of pavement materials.

The symposium’s program, which focuses only on student presentations, also featured poster sessions, where students had the opportunity to present and discuss their respective research efforts in more detail after oral presentations to allow discussions by follow students and professors.

After reviewing the performance of the PhD students in both oral presentation and poster sessions, attending faculty members voted for the best four presentations and the following doctoral students received the Seventh International Transportation PhD Student Symposium Best Research Presentation Awards:

  • Ruijun Cao: Modeling Acoustic Longevity of Low Noise Pavement in Hong Kong through Back-Propagation Neural Network (The Hong Kong Polytechnic University)
  • Guoyang Lu, Investigation on Hydro-Mechanical Interaction of Fully Permeable Pavement Subjected to Dynamic Loads (RWTH Aachen University)
  • Seunggu Kang, Stochastic Analysis of Energy Dissipation of a Tractor-Trailer Model on Rough Pavement (University of Illinois)
  • Chao Xing, Research of Local Deformation Property of Asphalt Mixture Based on Digital Image Correlation Method (Harbin Institute of Technology)

The 8th International Transportation PhD Student Symposium will be hosted by RWTH Aachen University, Germany on September 12-13, 2019 and will be by invitation only.
