Marshall Thompson, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering emeritus professor and longtime Illinois Center for Transportation researcher, received the inaugural Dave Newcomb Perpetual Pavement Pioneer Award at October’s Perpetual Pavement Conference.
Presented by the National Asphalt Pavement Association, the award recognizes individuals who have been instrumental in advancing and implementing perpetual pavement innovations.
Thompson joined the University of Illinois faculty in 1964 after earning all three of his degrees from the Department Civil and Environmental Engineering. Although he retired in 1996, he remains active in research and consulting, with an office in Newmark Lab.
With extensive experience in airfield and highway pavements, subgrade stabilization and concrete rehabilitation, Thompson has profoundly shaped the field’s research and practice.
At the conference’s close, NAPA Vice President for Engineering, Research and Technology Richard Willis, Margot Newcomb, and industry leaders Reed Ryan and Mike Anderson honored Thompson for his lasting impact on transportation infrastructure and commitment to sustainable, long-lasting pavements.
