Erol Tutumluer, CEE Abel Bliss Professor in Engineering, delivered the 2021 Carl L. Monismith Lecture at the American Society of Civil Engineers Geo-Congress 2022 on March 21.
Tutumluer’s lecture focused on dynamic loading behavior and characterization of unbound aggregate pavement layers, which provide structural support for overlaying pavement layers and protect underlying layers from changing shape or distorting.
Tutumluer presented on state-of-the-art research and implementation for designing and constructing highway and airport pavements. He focused on engineering behavior through advanced materials testing and characterization, accurate prediction of damage mechanisms and how to make pavements more sustainable and resilient.
The annual Monismith Lecture award was created to recognize the contributions of University of California, Berkeley professor Carl Monismith to pavement engineering.
Tutumluer was selected for the award based on his contributions to the field of pavement science and engineering. His key contributions include studying practical implications of geotechnical and pavement foundation issues in pavement design and performance as well as work on advanced- and mechanistic-based modeling of geomechanical and pavement systems.
