Tutumluer, Hashash honored at investiture ceremony

Illinois Center for Transportation researchers Erol Tutumluer and Youssef Hashash were honored at a University of Illinois Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering investiture ceremony on May 1.

Tutumluer and Hashash received named faculty appointments for their outstanding contributions to civil and environmental engineering as well as teaching and service.

Tutumluer, who has served as a CEE faculty member since 1996, was appointed the Abel Bliss Professor in Engineering.

His work focuses on transportation geotechnics, including the design and analysis of pavement systems, soil and aggregate materials, and sustainable infrastructure.

Hashash, who has served as a CEE faculty member since 1998, was named the Grainger Distinguished Chair of Engineering.

His groundbreaking work in geotechnical engineering includes developing advanced numerical modeling techniques for soil-structure interaction and analyzing underground construction projects.

The investiture ceremony was a testament to the dedication and passion both Tutumluer and Hashash have for their respective fields and was attended by faculty, staff, students and distinguished guests.

"I am proud to have Youssef and Erol as my colleagues in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering,” said Imad Al-Qadi, ICT Director and CEE Grainger Distinguished Chair in Engineering. “They both embody the spirit of collegiality, excellence, and dedication to their profession. I am confident that more is yet to come for them, and I look forward to continuing our journey together."
