Examining warm recycled asphalt quality: A paradigmatic seven-year case study

By Francesco Canestrari on 11/16/2023 from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. in 1611 Titan Drive Rantoul, IL 61866

Join Francesco Canestrari of Università Politecnica delle Marche, as he presents via Zoom at the Fall 2023 Kent Seminar Series Thursday, November 16, from 2-3 p.m. (CT).

This semester is set to feature 14 presentations, delving into a range of topics that address the intersection of transportation and climate change. Attendees will have the opportunity to explore various aspects of sustainable transportation practices, innovative green technologies and strategies for mitigating the impact of transportation on our changing climate.

Pizza and soft drinks will be provided beginning at 1:30 p.m. in the ICT Classroom

All presentations will be held on Zoom, but some speakers will present in person at ICT.

Abstract and Bio

In pavement engineering, demand for sustainable materials and technologies is increasing to lessen environmental impacts. Effectiveness is gauged through life-cycle assessment and life-cycle cost analysis, necessitating an understanding of the true “quality” (beyond measurable performance) of products and processes for informed decisions. Canestrari will discuss a paradigmatic case study on the use of warm recycled asphalt mixtures, showcasing findings from seven years of lab testing and in-situ monitoring.

Canestrari is a professor at Italy’s Università Politecnica delle Marche, where he earned a master’s degree. His research, which has garnered several best-paper awards, centers on characterizing sustainable and innovative pavement materials and pavement maintenance and management. Canestrari has been involved in numerous projects funded by public and private agencies. His research group has consistently ranked first in national evaluations of Italian research system achievements conducted by the Italian Ministry of University and Research since 2004.
