Abstract and Bio

Decarbonizing road transport necessitates innovative solutions. The development of electric vehicles, especially heavy vehicles, poses challenges due to the size and cost of batteries. Dynamic charging of heavy vehicles by the road, known as Electric Road Systems (ERS), offers a promising alternative to reduce battery size. In France, two demonstration projects are testing dynamic charging technologies, by induction and conductive rails, on motorways. This seminar presents Université Gustave Eiffel’s work on integrating these systems into road pavements. Laboratory and full-scale accelerated tests evaluated and compared different integration solutions under heavy vehicle loads, essential steps before real-road deployment.

Hornych is a senior researcher at Université Gustave Eiffel, Nantes Campus, in the Laboratory for Modelling, Experimentation, and Survey of Transport Infrastructures. Former director of LAMES until 2020, Pierre holds an HdR (habilitation to supervise research). His research interests include the mechanical behavior of road and airfield pavements and railway tracks, pavement modeling and design, full-scale accelerated pavement testing, pavement instrumentation and monitoring, and the development of innovative transport infrastructures.
