From nuclear reactor pressure vessels to a lighthouse - Part 1

By W. Charles Greer, Jr. on 3/30/2023 from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. in 1611 Titan Drive Rantoul, IL 61866

Join W. Charles Greer, Jr., adjunct lecturer at the University of Illinois and retired director of engineering at Law Engineering Testing Company in Atlanta, as he presents in person at the Spring 2023 Kent Seminar Series Thursday, March 30, from 2-3 p.m. (CT).

This semester we honor the legacy of Paul Kent with a special alumni series. All speakers are faculty members or graduates from UIUC’s Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering.

Pizza and soft drinks will be provided beginning at 1:30 p.m. in the ICT Classroom

All presentations will be held on Zoom, but some speakers will present in person at ICT.

Greer will present the techniques used to transport two nuclear reactor pressure vessels (2.1 million pounds each) across 46 miles of roadways in northeast Tennessee. The support system was a modular trailer system with 24 axle lines with 16 tires per axle line for a total of 384 tires. Greer presents an analysis of the design and construction of the required pavements, along with the results of the moves. This move served as a “practice project” for the later transport of a 208-foot-tall lighthouse weighing 10 million pounds across loose sand dunes at Cape Hatteras.
